Mass of Remembrance

10-20-2024Weekly ReflectionFr. Fred Adamson

Dear Parishioners,

It seems parish life is in full swing with activities, bible studies, prayer groups, religious education and adult formation are going strong. It is good to see the energy and activity associated with our growing as missionary disciples. Thanks for your engagement and support. It is my hope that each member of the community continues to grow in their faith through ongoing daily conversion.

The readings this week focus on what it means to be great as a Christian - service and humility. We all want to be saved and to know the Lord in a deeper way. Following on last week’s Gospel of the man who walks away sad because he was unwilling to let go of his many possessions - we again are called to let go of becoming great in this world though power, control and recognition and strive to be a humble servant. On the journey of faith, it is important to ponder what it means to serve as a Christian witness. For some it means serving a family at home, parents who are aging, and the various circumstances that life presents. We do so in love, kindness and patience - one day at time. It is good to also consider what we do outside our family and parish - is there a way we can serve in different ways in the greater community? Perhaps Saint Vincent de Paul, Andre House, Catholic Charities and countless service agencies located in the Valley. Using our hands, feet and eyes in Christian charity moves the heart and strengthens the soul.

It is important to develop a spirit of compassion and mercy for those who are struggling, the unwanted, homeless, hungry and sick. The message of the cross is one of love - sacrificial love in which we continue to die to self and live for others our entire life. Consider how God might be inviting you to serve in His name at this point in your journey. To be a witness and example of the love shown to us in the gift of His Son. Remember conversion is constant and a continual process of growth.

This Tuesday, October 22nd, we will have a Mass of Remembrance at 7:00 pm for all who have died this past year in our parish community. We will provide an opportunity for you to have a loved one remembered in the Mass through offering petitions. Also, the names of those who’s funerals were held here this past year, will be recognized. This is a special time as we approach All Saints and All Souls Day to remember our deep connection with the souls who have passed from this life. The instruction for the funeral rites remind us, “At the funeral rites, especially at the celebration of the Eucharistic sacrifice, the Christian community affirms and expresses the union of the Church on earth with the Church in heaven in the one great communion of saints. Though separated from the living, the dead are still one with the community of believers on earth and benefit from their prayers and intercession.” Please join us for this Mass of Remembrance.

Peace and goodness in Him,

Fr. Fred
