Dear Parishioners,
It is hard to believe it is the end of May and we are moving into the summer months of intense heat here in the desert. Like people in the North in the winter, we often spend more time indoors because of the high heat.
Maybe you can use this time to take advantage of our parish subscription to FORMED and watch a series or a class to grow in your faith. It is easy to sign up and completely free to all parishioners. The center page of our bulletin always has information and suggestions for different faith opportunities in FORMED.
I enjoy watching movies on the saints and the Bible Project videos that help us to better understand the books of the Bible. It is a real gift for us to grow at our own pace or even to watch it as a family. One hour a week can truly make an impact.
Of course, many parishioners have left already for cooler weather, and others are planning for summer vacations. I always encourage families and individuals to find a Church or a Shrine to visit in your travels. It can be an inspiring way to keep faith part of your journey.
With a little research, it can be fun to get off the beaten path and take some time to see the faith in different parts of our country as well as the world. If you do, be sure to share a social media post to help spread the good news.
Monday is Memorial Day, a day where we remember those U.S. military personnel who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Over the years, the day has developed into remembering all those who have served our country that have passed, as well as a day to visit the cemetery, place flowers, and pray, remembering our loved ones.
The small town my parents lived in after retiring had one of the most amazing small-town parades that included a bus of veterans who were always honored. Farmers came out in force with tractors, the local High School band marched, and many others represented the small town to honor veterans on this special day.
Make it more than about hot dogs and hamburgers kicking off summer. Remember to give thanks to God for these faithful men and women who gave their lives so we might live in freedom—able to practice our Catholic faith in this United States of America.
Our reading today we hear the promise of Jesus that He will send the Advocate, the Holy Spirit. We have just recently experienced the gift of the Spirit in the election of a new Roman Pontiff, Pope Leo XIV.
We trust that God is working through the Holy Spirit to guide us as a Church to a deeper love of Jesus. We must remember that a Pope is not called to fix the world but rather to lead us to the mercy of God in Jesus.
We are grateful and trust in the Lord.
Continued Easter peace and hope,
Fr. Fred
