Treasures That Matter to God

08-03-2025Weekly ReflectionFr. Fred Adamson

Dear Parishioners,

August is here, and soon kids will be returning to school. The parish, too, begins to get busier with activities after a bit of a slowdown over the summer months.

This week’s readings give us a good lesson to hold on to for perspective in life. Are we rich in what matters to God? So often, we chase after worldly things for our happiness when true peace and happiness can’t be found in things and possessions. We collect and store things that we will only someday leave behind.

Of course, we do need things to live, and some possessions help us on the journey, but Jesus tries to help us understand that our possessions can’t possess us. Instead, we simply possess things as we pass through life and store true treasures or riches that matter to God.

How we love and care for others. How we respond in compassion and care in challenging situations. How we avoid or squash gossip and detraction about people. Ultimately, how we love God, family and neighbor is what truly matters.

Imagine a treasure chest full of amazing times with people you love. It goes with you always. Returning from my family break and time of rest, I am deeply grateful. I treasure time with family - not that it’s always perfect - but because I know these are the people God has given me to love and be loved by. Spending more time in thought and prayer. Reflecting on God’s goodness and beautiful creation is also a treasure.

I am also grateful to be back at the parish, where we journey together to grow closer to God and His ways. Each week, we gather to thank God—to worship the source of all peace, happiness, truth and goodness. We help each other build our treasure chest with Godly things that truly matter.

Again, I’m grateful for my time away and to be back to share the journey of faith with all of you. I look forward to the year ahead and to how God will reveal His love to us and provide strength and grace in unimaginable ways.

May we always strive to store up the things that matter to God in our lives.

Peace, goodness, and joy in Him,

Fr. Fred
