Dear Parishioners,
Can you believe this weekend is the last weekend of August? Even though we who live here in Arizona have higher temperatures for a bit longer heading into September, things seem to change. Maybe it is the promise of cooler weather and the feeling that we made it through the hottest months. It is merely weather, but it does have an impact, as it reminds us of the changing seasons and the passing of life. God’s creation, including the wind, the stars, the oceans, rivers, mountains, hills, valleys, forests, and deserts, is deeply connected to us as men and women of faith. A favorite quote of our patron, Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, is “You will find more in the woods, than in books. Trees and stones will teach you that which you can never learn from the masters.”
As we step into September, take note of all that is happening in the parish community to help you grow in faith. We focus on our relationship with God, revealed as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and how we worship and connect with His saving and powerful love. At the same time, remember that He has made us for community and family life. We pray alone and together to gain a deeper understanding of God. Find something that helps you connect to Him and our community of faith.
This week’s Gospel is about humility, and Jesus uses the parable of a banquet to illustrate the point. It reminds us that humility is the foundation of spiritual life. Striving to see all things in the way that God sees them through the eyes of Jesus and His teachings. Perhaps this week we can be especially attentive to those we encounter who might need to be lifted in some way by our kindness, consolation, or assistance. Humility is truly demonstrated when it is lived out in our daily lives, and that is why Jesus uses a parable to awaken our attention to our own human weakness and the temptation to the sin of pride.
I want to bring to your attention the upcoming Latin Night on September 20th, sponsored by the Our Lady of Guadalupe Ministry. This event is open to the entire parish and is a wonderful evening featuring dinner, music, and dancing. Last year, the live band and dance performance were excellent. These social events help us get to know our fellow parishioners better.
Be sure to check out the webpage and the bulletin for the many opportunities to help you and your family grow in faith. If you are not part of FORMED sign up and watch a weekly video together as a family and talk about what you learned.
Have a blessed Labor Day weekend. Be safe if you are traveling.
Peace and hope in Him,
Fr. Fred
