Dear Parishioners,
This weekend's readings invite us to reflect deeply on the love we have for Jesus-our first and greatest love. We're reminded that no relationship or possession should take precedence over our commitment to Him. At first, this may seem challenging, even jarring, especially in light of Jesus's command to love others. But what He asks of us is not to reject love, but to elevate it-toward a love that mirrors His: pure, selfless, and perfect.
Our human love, while beautiful, can at times be influenced by self-interest or attachment. Yet when we embrace Christ's love and strive to imitate Him, we begin to live a love that is truly self-giving. This kind of love seeks the good of the other, even when it comes at a cost. Through sacrifice, we discover joy. Through surrender, we find freedom. And through the Cross, we are led to glory.
Jesus's invitation to "take up our cross" is not a burden, but a call to live the Christian life with courage and purpose-as His disciples, sent into the world.
As we begin a new season, I'm excited to share that our Faith Formation programs are starting this week! We have opportunities for both K-8 and high school-aged disciples. It's going to be a year full of growth, learning, and deepening our love for God and His Church. In addition, our Children's Choir and other parish ministries are beginning-wonderful ways to participate more fully in our community and live out your faith.
This Thursday, September 11th, marks the 24th anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks. We will commemorate this solemn day with Mass at 9:00 AM, followed by a remembrance service at the Memorial on the north side of our Church campus. This special memorial contains a cross formed from the steel beams of the World Trade Center. Together, we will honor those who lost their lives, pray for first responders and members of the military, and ask for peace in our world-especially an end to terrorism and violence.
Looking ahead, on Wednesday, September 18th, we are hosting a Listening Session for Young Adults, ages 19-39, from 6:00 to 8:30 PM. Whether you're single or married, practicing your faith regularly or exploring your spiritual path, you are welcome. This event is part of Bishop Dolan's Synod on Young Adults, which seeks to better understand and accompany young people in their journey of faith. If you or someone you know has questions, has drifted from the Church, or is simply searching, this is a place to be heard and supported. All are welcome.
God loves each of His children deeply and personally. We are all on a journey, and together, through prayer, community, and open hearts, we continue walking that path with Him.
Peace and hope in Him,
Fr. Fred
