Advent Stillness, Christmas Joy

12-21-2025Weekly ReflectionFr. Fred Adamson

Dear Parishioners,

As we enter the fourth Sunday of Advent, the final purple candle joins the others in shining brightly on our Advent wreath. Together they remind us that the Light of Christ is drawing near, just four short days away. These final days before Christmas are often filled with activity and last-minute preparations. But as important as the tree, the decorations, and the gifts may be, even more important is a heart that is ready; ready to receive the peace and love of our God and the incomparable gift of His Son.

Throughout this Advent season, our parish has journeyed with the theme of Being Still. For some, this came through the Hallow Prayer Challenge; for others, it was a conscious effort to discover how stillness is possible even amid busyness. True stillness begins in the heart-nourished by grace, strengthened by prayer, and anchored in God's faithful love. In these last precious days of Advent, I encourage you once more: be still. Let your heart grow quiet enough to ponder the astonishing mystery of Emmanuel - God with us.

As Christmas approaches, many of our Masses, especially the early ones, will be overflowing with people who may not have been with us in a long time, or perhaps ever. For some, this will be their first step back into a church in years. How we welcome them truly matters.

Take a moment to imagine Bethlehem on that first Christmas night; crowded, noisy, chaotic. There was barely room for Mary and Joseph, and yet God chose to enter the world in the midst of that disorder. What many might have seen as unholy, God made holy by His presence. And He continues to do that today.

So, if you find yourself feeling a little impatient with the crowds or the extra bustle, remember, for someone, this Christmas may be their first encounter with the Church or with the beauty of the Catholic liturgy. Let us welcome them with patience, warmth, and genuine love. God's love is for all, and we are blessed to open our doors, to the familiar and the unfamiliar alike. In a very real way, we become Bethlehem once again - a place where Christ is welcomed into the world. Please be sure to check our Christmas and New Year's Mass schedule so that you and your family can join us for these sacred celebrations.

I also want to express my heartfelt gratitude for the many goodies, cards, and gifts that have appeared at the office these past weeks; and that continue to arrive throughout the season. Your generosity and kindness are a true blessing.

In the midst of all that awaits you this week, remember to slow down. Savor the moments with family and friends. God often reveals Himself in the simple relationships and encounters of our daily lives; in a kind word spoken or received, in a shared laugh, in comforting someone who is hurting, in recognizing the person who feels forgotten. Wait, watch, and let yourself be surprised by the tenderness of His love.

We are ready, with joyful hearts, to celebrate that God is with us. Come, Lord Jesus, come.

Wishing you continued Advent peace, joy, and stillness,

Fr. Fred
